How to Build a Good Coupon Supply

I am writing this for those of you who are new to coupon shopping, which if you aren't aware is "the new in thing!"  Coupons have become a very valuable commodity to me.  I treat them like cash, because using them is like putting cash in the bank!  Building your coupon supply takes a little time, but in a few months you will have as many as the seasoned coupon clipping pros.  I've only been at it a short time, and am very happy with my stash.  I want to share with you how I've done it.

  1. Start with the Sunday paper.  There are usually two inserts: Red Plum and Smart Source.  Occasionally Proctor & Gamble and General Mills will include an insert.  I subscribe to two papers in my area, The Seattle Times and The Everett Herald.  Unfortunately the Seattle paper does not carry the Red Plum insert, so as soon as my subscription runs out I am cancelling it and getting two subscriptions to The Everett Paper.  When coupons are really good I will buy extra papers.  This ensures having enough coupons to use stocking up on items when they are really cheap.  For example, I used two "buy one get one free" coupons at Rite Aid yesterday to get four free Herbal Essence Products because the store was also having a "buy one get one free" sale on these products.  That easily paid for the cost of two papers for those coupons alone.  The Herald also has a deal going that allows you to get a subscription for $1 a week for 26 weeks, making it 50¢ cheaper than at the news stands.  Always check with your local paper for the best deals before subscribing.
  2. Get coupons off of the internet.  There are several great sites, including RedPlum.com, SmartSource.com, Coupons.com, BettyCrocker.com, SimpleAndDelicious.com, and Save-A-Lot.   Coupons available often change month to month, but this is variable.  When I first found these sites I was printing coupons like crazy.  Then I realized how much costly ink and paper I was using and how few of these coupons I was actually utilizing.  Now I print only high value coupons and coupons I know I will use.  If I need more, I go back later and print them.
  3. There is another coupon site on the web called "Bricks" at Coupons Inc.  You can print coupons directly from the manufacturers.  What is available and how long varies.  This is one of the best places to find great, high value coupons!
  4. All You Magazine, a monthly periodical sold only at Wal-Mart stores, is a good source for coupons.  Subscribing to the magazine is the most cost effective way to get it, and you can sometimes find discount subscriptions at Amazon.com.  Always look in all your other magazines too.  I have found coupons in Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, and Shape, to name a few.
  5. I always grab coupons from "Blinkie Machines" in the store isle.  Even if I don't need them right then, I file them away for later use, just in case.
  6. Look for "Peelies," coupons attached to the products you are buying.  Sometimes they are worth less than other manufacturer coupons you may already plan to use, so stash them away for later.  (You usually can't use more than one manufacturer coupon per transaction.)
  7. Sign up for product newsletters.  You often get coupons emailed to you this way.  I do suggest using a junk email for this, so your personal email doesn't get clogged up.  Some newsletters to try are Right At Home from SC Johnson that has great Glade coupons and  Nestle.comMambo Sprouts and Organic Valley Family of Farms are also good if you like natural and organic products.
  8. Join Vocalpoint, a program offered by Proctor & Gamble  that offers many fabulous samples and high value coupons.  You must fill out a questionaire and be accepted, because this is a "word of mouth program."  (Hint: the more people you talk to on a regular basis the more likely you are to be choosen.)  I recently received multiple $3.00 and $1.50 coupons for Kashi cereal and a $50+ jar of Olay Pro-X!
  9. Take a look inside packages and on boxes before tossing them in the garbage or in the recycling.  I have found some good coupons for example on cereal and granola bar boxes, and inside product packaging.
  10. If you have a little one in diapers, join all the diaper networks.  I have received great coupons from all three major brands.  To find out more information and for links go HERE.
  11. For those who don't want to hassle with paper coupons, you may want to try paperless eCoupons.  You can check out my post all about them  HERE.
Hope this helps any of you who are new to couponing with building your coupon supply!  For ideas on how to organize all those coupons, I like Money Saving Mom's method  HERE.  It is the organizational tool I use and it has worked well for me so far.

If you have any other ideas on accumulating coupons, please leave me a comment!

Leapfrog Alphabet Pal for 49¢ at Target!

Update:  I tried this deal and they wouldn't price match because their in store policy states they will only price match weekly ads.  I even had a copy of their policy from the internet that had no mention of ad limitations.  They were willing to price match the Mr. Potato Head B1G1 Free Fred Meyer ad, but would only allow me to use one coupon.  Very disappoiniting! Most stores are new to pricematching, so you might have better luck at other Target stores!

Tomorrow Toys R US is having a huge doorbuster sale.  In their ad they have Leapfrog's Alphabet Pal on sale for $10.49.  You can bring this ad to Target for pricematching, use the Target $10 off coupon from their Toy Guide and pay only 49¢!  For details go HERE.  Thanks Common Sense With Money!  Please make sure see her post HERE, that explains Target's Pricematching Policy and has links so you can  print the policy and bring it with you.  Sounds like there should be no problems getting this deal to work!  I'm going to give it a try tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed.  Thanks Money Saving Mom!

Fred Meyers currently has Mr. Potato Head and Mrs. Potato Head advertised B1G1 (buy one get one) Free.  There is a coupon available HERE for $2 off Mr. Potato Head.  I plan to price match this at Target tomorrow too and use 2 of these coupons (will take $2 off each).  It's my understanding that Fred Meyer's Policy does not allow coupons to be used for free items, so I am thinking I will have better luck at Target utilizing their price match policy.  Thanks Golden's Bargain Blog for a heads up on this deal!

It is important to remember to bring the entire competor's ad when trying to price match at Target.  The link to the Target's Price Match  Policy is HERE.

Black Friday Previews

Are you a Black Friday Shopper?  I must admit that I am definately not.  I'm am not much for long lines, crazy crowds and overwhelmed cashiers!  I try to get as much holiday shopping done ahead of time as I possibly can.  What I can't get done, I try to do online and on early mornings when the stores are quiet and serene.  I know I probably miss out on some awesome deals, and maybe this year I'll be brave and give it a try if I find a bargain too good to pass up.  For those of you who wait all year for Black Friday shopping, there is a great site that gives you a preview of the ads from most of the National Retailers.  You can check it out HERE.  Enjoy!

Food Drive November 18th

If you are local, and live near the Fred Meyers in Bothell, Renton, or Issaquah, KOMO News will be hosting food drives at these locations on November 18th between the hours of 6am and 7pm.  They are in memory of Brenden Foster of Bothell, a youngster whose dying wish was to feed the hungry. These food drives will be benefiting Northwest Harvest and Food Lifeline.  Go HERE for more information.

I think this is an awesome opportunity to help some of the many people in need this holiday season.  I am so grateful to have cupboards full of food, and plenty to share with others!

Alpo Dog Food Catalina

Fred Meyers will have "off your next purchase" catalinas available for Alpo Dog Food® purchases between 11/13 and 12/06 as follows:

Buy (8) Get a $1.00 catalina
Buy (10) Get a $2.00 catalina
Buy (15)  or more, Get a $3.00 catalina

Prices for Alpo canned dog food start at 59¢ at Fred Meyers.

This catalina may be available at other Kroger affiliates such as QFC, Dillon's, Smith's, Ralph's, and Kroger, but this hasn't been confirmed.

If you are unfamiliar with catalinas, they are the coupons that come out of the machine next to store cash registers.  They are from the manufacturers, and not the stores you receive them from.  They can be used just like manufacturer coupons you get from Sunday inserts or from internet sites, but you must use them at the store you receive them from.  Off your next order catalinas  take the specified amount off of your purchase and can be used for most items.  Exclusions are listed on the catalina coupons.

This Week In Review: 11/1 - 11/7 (76% Savings)

I really didn't do a lot of grocery shopping this week.  I was actually waiting for double coupons to use with the ongoing General Mills/Betty Crocker promo at Albertsons, which will be included in next weeks review.  I also still have a decent food stockpile.  And, since I am fairly new to coupon shopping and buying in bulk I must admit I haven't invested in a large freezer yet, and my little one is stuffed!  I know I would be saving even more money by doing getting one, but we don't buy anything on credit and it hasn't been in the budget.  (I am getting desperate for one though after reading Money Saving Mom's awesome freezer cooking ideas.)  Buying a large freezer is high on my wish list, but unfortunately it might have to wait until after Christmas.  I did get to stock up on make-up and some personal care items at the drugstores this week.

Here are my figures:

Week Total: $62.89
Average Percent Saved: 76%

Fred Meyer:
Amount Spent: $32.50 before tax
Amount Saved: $40.27 ($72.77, total before coupons & sales)
Percent Saved: 55%

Albertsons: (Two Trips)
Amount Spent: $9.94 before tax
Amount Saved: $28.89 ($38.38, total before coupons & sales)
Percent Saved: 75%
Highlights: 6 Sara Lee Deli Meat Pkgs. for roughly $1.33 each, regularly $5.99 each)

Walgreens: (Multiple Trips)
Amount Spent: $16.88 and I earned $26.00 in Register Rewards!
Amout Saved: $137.38
Percent Saved: 89%, If you count Register Rewards 100%
Highlights: 17 free Almay Mascaras!

Rite Aid:
Amount Spent: $10.49, Submitted SRC of $7.00, making total $3.49
Amount Saved: $19.27
Percent Saved: 85%

I do my figures before tax just to keep the math simple.  What do you think?  Leave me a comment!

This shopping trip was actually a comedy of errors!  My first transaction rang up under $30 before coupons due to a math error on my part, so the cashier had to suspend the order while I went and got more items.  Then one of my coupons was expired by a day, so I had to fumble to find a new one (fortunately I always bring back-ups).  At the end of my transaction the catalina didn't print so another cashier had to force print one after carefully inspecting my entire purchase.  I was going to do another transaction, but after the problems with this one I decided to wait and do my next transaction at the Albertsons down the road (hoping for better luck).

The second transaction turned out better, but the catalina didn't print at this Albertsons either!  Oh my!  Another cashier once again carefully inspected my order and force printed my catalina.  But, her catalina machine ran out of paper so she had to go to the office and photocopy a catalina for me. (I hope it works!)  A bit of a headache, but for 97% savings I'm still happy!

For those new to couponing, do not be discouraged, this doesn't happen to me often.  If you ever have problems with catalinas printing, always ask a manager to review it.  Generally they will force print one for you.  If they say they can't, you can always call the catalina company at 1-888-826-8766 and they will instruct you on how to obtain it.

For more Albertsons deals this week go here.  Remember, these double coupons are good through November 10th.
