Trouble With Quaker Coupons at Albertsons?

I've heard that people are having trouble using the $1/1 printable Quaker Coupons that were recently available.  Apparently any Quaker coupon with the expiration date of 2/28/2010 is considered fraudulent.  If you have this coupon do not attempt to redeem it!  Jane at All Together Beautiful contacted Quaker and this is what they told her in an email reply:

"Unfortunately, online coupon fraud is a major problem that we, and other manufacturers, are trying to combat. We had a prior coupon on which someone changed the expiration date (to 2/28/2010) and those coupons are not valid. The current coupon on our site has a date of 4/30/10 and is indeed valid. Since it can be difficult to tell which coupons are legitimate, some stores are erring on the side of caution and are refusing to accept either coupon."

It's sad that this had to happen.  At my local Albertsons they are not accepting any internet printable Quaker coupons now, even the legitimate "Create Your Day Experience" $1 off coupon.  This is how coupon fraud hurts everyone.

For more details I recommend you read Jane's post here.

On a more positive note, they are still accepting all other Quaker manufacturer coupons and there are doubles this weekend!  There is  more info on the Quaker Promo here.

What Are Catalina Coupons?

You have probably seen the term cat or catalina used all over the frugal blogosphere.  I've received a few emails with questions about what they are and how they work, so I thought I would try to explain them to the best of my understanding.  Mind you, I'm not an expert, but I do have some experience using them.

Catalina coupons are the ones that come out of the little machines next to the cash registers at most big grocery store chains.  You know, the ones the cashier hands you when you are checking out.  Their name comes form the company that distributes them, Catalina Marketing  Generally, these are manufacturer coupons and promotions.  Occasionally you will get a store coupon or an advertisement for a local company.  If it is a manufacturer coupon, you will need to use it at the retail chain you received it from.

This is an example of a Pillsbury Promotion catalina, and is typical of the ones you will see.  (When you buy X amount of the specified products, you will receive X amount off of your next purchase).  These promotions usually run for about 3-4 weeks.  As a general rule, if one store is running the promotion, all of the big chains are running it as well.  This is not written in stone though!  These promotions generally cause a lot of excitement because when an item included in the promotion goes on sale and you have manufacturer coupons to go along with it you can get some of the best deals.  Here's an example using the catalina above:

Buy 6 Pillsbury Crescents for the sale price of $1.00 each
Use (3) $1/2 manufacturer coupons
Pay $3 at check out and earn a $4 off your next purchase catalina
Final Price: $1 moneymaker! ← (excitement)

This is an example of catalina coupon that you receive for participating in a promotion, like the one I just mentioned.  (I got this one when I bought 4 boxes of Ziploc bags.) They are also known as "OYNO, or off your next order" catalinas.  You can use this catalina coupon on anything you purchase, compliments of the manufacturer who ran the promotion.  Of course there are a few exceptions, like alcohol and tobacco.  Like I mentioned above, you just have to use it at the grocery chain that you received it from.

This is an example of a manufacturer coupon that comes out of the catalina machine.  You can use it like any other manufacturer coupon, meaning you can stack it with a store coupon, but not with another manufacturer coupon.  Once again, just make sure you use it at the retailer where you got it.  Obviously, I would use this one at Fred Meyer.

I wanted to mention that I have had problems in the past with "off your next order" catalina coupons not printing.  Fortunately the store I was shopping at has worked with me and "force printed" them.  But, if this ever happens to you and the store can't help you out, you can call the Catalina Marketing Company at 1-888-8COUPON (1-888-826-8766) or 1-888)-322-3814.  It is not the stores responsibility and I was just lucky to have some really nice checkers.

If you are wondering how you find out about all of the catalina promotions, unfortunatley there isn't any one spot.  Frugal blogs are often a great source of information.  Frequently, big promotions are advertised in weekly store circulars.  You can also check out coupon forums like A Full Cup and Hot Coupon World.

Hope this clears a few things up for anyone who has had questions about catalinas!

My Freezer Cooking Day Plan

Money Saving Mom and Fish Mama are another round of Freezer Cooking Days this month and I've decided to give it a try. The official dates are January 29th through February 2nd.   I plan to do my cooking on Monday the 1st.  Since I am a beginner at this I am going to plan a pretty easy list. If all goes well, I might become a little more ambitious for the next go around.

Here's my plan:

(2) Chicken Tetrazinni Dinners
(1) Freezer Lasagna
(2) Batches of Banana Nut Muffins
Brown and freeze 5 lbs. of ground beef
Steam and blanch 3 lbs. of carrots
Sugar Cookie Dough for the freezer (time and energy permitting)

If you plan to play along you can sign up on their Facebook Event Day page here.  You can also follow along on twitter using the hashtag #oamc.  I'm not much a tweeter myself, so I will probably just stick with Facebook.

Should be fun, or at least educational!

What I Learned at Walgreens

I was in Walgreens last night to pick up a few items, and was excited to see that the gal checking out in front of me had a cart full of items she was purchasing by rolling register rewards.  (I don't see other shoppers doing this very often, and sometimes feel like I'm the only one!)   She also happened to be using the coupons from the highly coveted Walgreen's Children's Activity Book that I have been so desperately trying to find recently!

I told her that I had purchased the Activity Book in the past, but no longer had most of the coupons inside.  I did not realize that you do not have to turn these coupons over, and had given them to the cashiers with my previous purchases!  I was now having trouble locating more of these books.

I also mentioned that I had already bought three packs of Huggies, as part of the great deal that is going on this week, and wanted to buy more but they were out of my baby's size.  She suggested buying a larger size and just exchanging them later. That way I would still get the $5 register reward this week.  Duh, why hadn't I thought of that?!

She was so sweet, and offered to let me use the Huggies coupon from her Activity Book.  The cashier was fine with it, so of course I bought some more diapers!  The coupon brought the diapers down to  $4.32 each when factoring in the $5 RR I earned.

Now for the best part...

She was shopping with a  friend.  That friend happened to have an extra Children's Activity Book in her car so she gave it to me!!!  Now that's coupon clipper commroderie!

These gals had a great system going.  I think they do their Wags shopping together on a regular basis.  They were organized and on the ball!  It made me want to find a shopping buddy.

Lessons Learned:
  1. Don't turn over coupons from The Children's Activity book.  Just have the cashier scan them.
  2. If you want to do the Huggies diaper deal and they are out of the size you need, buy the wrong size and exchange them later.
  3. Couponers need to stick together!
If you are a local and are trying to find a book she suggested checking the Lynnwood 24 hour location!

Great Deal on Filippo Berio Olive Oil at Fred Meyer

I was in Fred Meyer this morning to take advantage of the Ziploc catalina promo and I noticed a super deal on Flippo Berio Olive Oil.  The large 25.5 oz varieties are on sale for $5.99 using the hangtag coupon that is on the store shelf next to them (pictured below).

There was also a $1/1 manufacturer blinkie coupon  on the shelf.  Stack these coupons and you will only pay $4.99 for a large bottle of olive oil.  They normally sell for $9.69, so that is almost half off!

I'm not sure if all stores have this blinkie, so check your stash.  This coupon was on coupons.com recently and in some Sunday inserts.

My Week of Savings In Review 1/17 -1/23

All in all it was a great week for deals!  I really didn't want to do this week in review though for several reasons.  I made three shopping trips and had nine total transactions.  I  got everything logged into my savings tracker, but corresponding the deals to my pictures was a little tricky because there are so many.  To complicate things, I bought a new computer over the weekend and was having trouble linking it with the old one.  Today I was also having a problem with internet explorer, so I switched to Firefox, and there seem to be some differences. Yikes!

After only spending $30 the previous week, I made up for it by spending $65.98 this week.   My savings were $139.58 or 68%.  I did a lot of stocking up and am really happy about that.  Eventually I hope to be able to eat from my pantry too, but this wasn't the month to do it.  Soon though, very soon!

SAFEWAY:

Paid: $11.93
Shelf Cost: $37.27
Saved: 68%

Paid: $2.60
Shelf Cost: $23.72
Saved: 89% and earned a $3.50 OYNO coupon

I had two more transactions that I didn't get  photos of.  This is what my stock pile of fruit snacks looks like now though!
Spent: $6.57 OOP, used $3.50 catalina
Shelf Cost: $48.21
Total Savings: 87% and I still have $6 in catalinas

ALBERTSONS:

Spent: $17.43
Shelf Cost: $46.50
Total Savings: 65%

FRED MEYER:

There is one picture missing, in which I bought more TP, baby food, gum and produce.
Spent: $27.45
Shelf Cost: $27.45
Amount Saved: 49%

Here's how I am doing for the month:

I still have $95.74 to spend and still stay within my budget.  I plan to stock up on meat and diapers this coming week, so I might just hit that mark.  So far I have saved $453. 42 or 69%!

Menu Plan Monday 1/25

It's time for Menu Plan Monday once again, where I get to share how my last week of planning went, and what I have in store for the coming week.  I have to admit, this is only my fourth week of doing this, and I am already running out of steam.  I never realized how small my recipe box is and can't  believe I am starting to have trouble coming up with new ideas.  Sad, I know, but fortunately my family never really complains.  Maybe they will be really happy now with some new creativity at the dinner table!

Last week I pretty much stuck to my menu plan.  Once again I shuffled meal days, but the meals themselves mostly went according to the plan.  I did have to use chicken in one recipe instead of pork because I was out.  On Saturday I got busy going through ads, so my husband just went and got a pizza from Papa Murphy's, my old standby.  There were no other major changes.

After checking out a few other plans at I'm an Organization Junkie for inspiration, here's what we will be eating this week:

Monday:  Chicken noodle soup with homemade egg noodles, rolls. I make this a lot, but it's a family favorite.

Tuesday:  Sloppy Joes, baked fries, green salad.

Wednesday:  Tuna Casserole, peas, Pillsbury bread sticks.

Thursday:  Baked pork chops with rice in cream of mushroom soup, mixed veggies.

Friday:  Broccoli cheddar quiche, and ?

Saturday:  Farmhouse chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans.

Sunday:  Going to Seattle Children's Museum, so dinner out.

Need some inspiration of your own?  Check out tons of other menu plans at I'm an Organization Junkie!
