$3 Diapers at Toys R Us Black Friday!

There is going to be a  great diaper deal at Toys "R" Us on Black Friday:

Fisher Price Happy Days Diapers at  $5 per 23 to 50-count package if you buy 2 (limit 3, must buy at least 2 to get this price).  Available from 12 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Black Friday.

Use (2) $2/1 coupons HERE
Final Price: $3 per package after coupons

This is a fantastic price for diapers.   If I bring someone with me I could get 6 packs of diapers for $18.00!  I do not typically shop on Black Friday.  I seriously do not like the craziness, but at this price I will definately have to  consider it.  Hmmm....

Thanks Money Saving Mom!

Homemade Dryer Sheets: Too Frugal?

I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago about saving money on household cleaning. In it, I mentioned making your own homemade dryer sheets.  Since I recently got a couple of bottles of Snuggle fabric softener for free using some high value coupons, I thought I would give it a try.

It turned out to be really easy.  I simply took a few old wash cloths and soaked them with the fabric softener.  Then I rung out the excess liquid and put it back into the bottle.  (I did make the mistake of not wearing gloves when I did this, and could not get the smell of the fabric softener off my hands for the rest of the day, no matter how hard I scrubbed!)  Next, I put the wash cloths in the garage to dry overnight.

Now the acid test, actually using them in the dryer.....

The results were not bad at all.  I read that you could reuse them up to 10 times.  I found that this was a bit too much, as they did the job for about 5 cycles each.  They didn't leave any discoloration on the fabric, and my clothes had a fresh scent.  Since it only took a couple minutes to make them, I will probably do it again (with gloves on).  I'm sure the fabric softener will last me a long time this way.

To some it may seem too frugal.  But hey, when you get a free product, why not get as much use out of it as possible!

Do you have any frugal tips?  Leave me a comment!

Use Your Free Freshpet Coupons at Safeway

I've been holding onto several Freshpet Select Homestyle Coupons for a Free Product up to $2.50, for awhile now.  I was finally was able to use them at Safeway the other day.  They have 10.25 oz containers of their moist dog food at Safeway for $2.49, so I was able to get three for free!  I  got my coupons from the 9/15 Smart Source Insert, and they don't expire until 12/31/09.  This is the regular price at Safeway, so if you still have those coupons (and a dog), don't let them go to waste!

Right now Safeway and Star 101.5 are teaming up to give 4 lucky winners a  $1000 gift card!  Go HERE to find out more information about this awsome giveaway!  Thanks Maybe Frugal!

Hot New Can't Believe It's Not Butter Coupon

There's a hot new $1.00 off one Can't Believe It's Not Butter product coupon.  My computer let me print 5!  I didn't try to print more because I'm getting low on ink.  Go HERE for IE or HERE for FF, you may be able to print more than 5!  It doesn't expire until 2/15/2010, so there's plenty of time to use them .  I'm happy because this is the spread I use, and I should be able to find it for cheap now.

Holiday Meal Planning: Fred Meyers

I posted Fred Meyer deals for this week already (here), but I wanted to highlight all the savings for  your Thanksgiving Holiday meal items.  There turkey deal isn't that great in my opinion (listed below), because I never spend $150 at Fred Meyers in one shopping trip and even 49¢ is a little steep.  But, there are some good prices on many of the traditional holiday menu items.  If you have time to shop around you will probably find some better deals.  But, if you only have time to do "one stop shopping" this may help you plan your trip.

SeeHere Freebies Update

I just found out that the free offers from SeeHere.com were meant only for customer's who were ordering from mall appearances.  I appologize for this mistake.  Please read the email copy and pasted below if you ordered the calander and ornaments I posted yesterday.  Sorry for the inconvenience!

Recently, you used a promotional code for a free photo ornament, 12-month photo calendar and/or (25) 4×8 photo cards. These promotional codes were only valid with a purchase of a Santa photo package that is currently being offered in select malls across the country.

Unfortunately, the free product promotional codes were posted on various websites and are now being redeemed without a Santa Photo Package purchase. All orders for these free photo products have been placed on hold and will now be completed with validation of purchase.

If you purchased a Santa Photo Package, please contact us by phone, email or mail and we will be happy to assist you in completing your free photo gift order.
Please contact us within the next ten business days or your order will be cancelled. Thank you.

Hearty Potato Bacon Soup 84¢ per serving!

I love a hot bowl of soup when the weather is blustery and soggy like it was today, so I decided to make potato bacon soup for dinner tonight.  It's a fairly easy and a very economical meal that hits the spot on a fall night.  This recipe makes about six servings and cost me about 84¢ per serving!
Ingredients:
  • 8-10 medium potatoes
  • 2 large carrots
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 1 large onion
  • half a package of bacon (about 10 slices)
  • chicken broth 32 oz. container
  • 2 chicken bouillon cubes
  • 1-2 TBSP corn starch
  • 12 oz can of evaporated milk
  • salt & pepper
  • 3-4 cups of water
  • cheddar cheese 8 oz. shredded
Preparation:

1.  Peel potatoes and chop into large chunks.  Place in a large pot.  Add chicken broth and add enough water just to cover the top of the potatoes.  Bring to a boil.

2.  Slice bacon into small pieces and cook until crisp.

3.  While potatoes start to boil, chop carrots, onion, and celery into bite size pieces.  Place vegetables in a pan and saute' in a little oil until softened.  (You can cook in bacon grease if you want to be indulgent!)

4.  By this time the potatoes should be tender (you don't want them mushy).  Add vegetables, bacon and bouillon cubes.  Boil together for about 5 minutes.

5.  Add one can of evaporated milk and bring back to a boil.

6.  Thicken with equal parts mixed corn starch and cold water.  I usually start with 1 TBSP of each and add more until soup reaches desired thickness.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.

7.  Top with shredded cheddar cheese!

Yummy!

Cost Calculations: Potatoes: 75¢/lb ($1.49/10 lb FM), Carrots 50¢ ($2.98/lb FM), Celery 20¢ (79¢/lb FM), Bacon $1.25 ($2.50 FM), Onion 49¢ (49¢/lb FM), Chicken Broth 50¢ (Albies recent promo), Chicken Bullion 37¢ ($1.49/ 8 pk FM), Cheddar Cheese $1 ($3.99/ 2 lb FM last wk), Corn Starch & seasonings: pennies).  Total: $5.06, 84¢ each for 6 servings.

Fresh Mixers Coupon

Keep an out for a great $1.50 off (1) Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers coupon.  I found them in the cereal isle of my local Fred Meyer store.  I've seen Fresh Mixers on sale for around $2.00 to $2.50 at various stores, so that would make for a cheap lunch if you like these!

This Week In Review: 73% Savings

I'm a little late in writing this post, but I wanted to share my savings this week.  I saved $208.00 or 73% this week!  Clipping coupons and researching deal does take me a few hours a week, but when I calculate how much time I spend with how much I save, I would be making about $50 an hour.  Well worth my time!

Here are my figures:

Fred Meyer: (Pictured Above, with a few items from Albertsons)
Amount Spent: $38.38
Amount Saved: $96.15
Percent Saved: 71%
Highlights:  I used $17 in free grocery coupons earned with  Fred Meyer rewards points! I also found Star Olive Oil Reduced to $4.99 from $8.69 and I use (4) $4 off coupons for them, making them 99¢ each!

Albertsons: (10 lbs in free hamburger not pictured)

Amount Spent: $25.33
Amount Saved: $93.45
Percent Saved: 79%
Highlights:  10 lbs. in free ground beef using my left over $15 catalina, and a lot of really cheap food you can check out HERE!

Target:
Amount Spent: $8.85 before tax
Amount Saved: $15.00
Percent Saved: 63%
Highlights:  Target has unlimited $1 off coupons for Up & Up Baby wipes so I bought 15 at 57¢ each!   These coupons are good until 12/5 and you can print your HERE if you want to take advantage of this awesome price!

I also got 4 free Herbal Essence products at this week, just paid tax. (Unfortunately, I can't tell you exactly how much I saved because I can't find my receipt anywhere!)

Total Spent: $72.56

I wish I could get my bill down to $50 a week like a lot of women I read about!  But, since I am fairly new at the couponing and deal game, I have really just started to start stockpiling and buying in bulk.  I am probably spending  at least $10 a week on this now.  I also include all my personal care items in my totals.  This week I was happy to get 15 boxes of baby wipes.  I plan on donating 5 of these, but the other 10 will last me quite a while!  I only plan to spend money on Thanksgiving dinner items this week, so my bill should be considerably lower if all goes as planned.

How did you do?  Do you have any money saving tips?  Please leave me a comment!

Don't Forget about the Food Drive Wednesday Nov. 18

I posted this last week, so this is a reminder.  If you are local, and live near the Fred Meyer in Bothell, Renton, or Issaquah, KOMO News will be hosting food drives at these store locations on November 18th between the hours of 6am and 7pm.  They are in memory of Brenden Foster of Bothell, a youngster whose dying wish was to feed the hungry. These food drives will be benefiting Northwest Harvest and Food Lifeline, great local organizations.  Go HERE for more information.

I am so grateful to have a pantry full of food and other products that I have gotten for free or almost free by using coupons and finding deals.  Now is a great opportunity for me to help some of those in need and express my gratitude for all that I have been given!  If you aren't in the area or don't live near one of these stores I am sure there will be lots of opportunities in the coming weeks!  Let me know and I would be happy to spread the word!

Update:  I just found a great Food Bank Challenge at Moneywise Moms.com!  She is challenging shoppers to set aside $10 this month for food bank donations.  Here's what I'm going to donate on Wednesday:

This is from my pantry:
(5) Boxes of Baby Wipes: $2.38 Target
(4) Cans of Tuna: $1.33 Fred Meyer
(1) Quaker Oats: $2.50 Fred Meyer
(2)Boxes of Cheerios: $1.00  from recent Albertson's Promo
(2) Cans of Progresso Soup: 50¢ from Fred Meyer
(1) Skippy Penut Butter: Around 50¢ recently at Target
(2) Progrsso Broth Boxes: Around $2.00 from recent Albertson's Promo
Total: $10.21

Check out her post HERE.  Thanks Maygan, at Maybe Frugal for finding this!

How to Build a Good Coupon Supply

I am writing this for those of you who are new to coupon shopping, which if you aren't aware is "the new in thing!"  Coupons have become a very valuable commodity to me.  I treat them like cash, because using them is like putting cash in the bank!  Building your coupon supply takes a little time, but in a few months you will have as many as the seasoned coupon clipping pros.  I've only been at it a short time, and am very happy with my stash.  I want to share with you how I've done it.

  1. Start with the Sunday paper.  There are usually two inserts: Red Plum and Smart Source.  Occasionally Proctor & Gamble and General Mills will include an insert.  I subscribe to two papers in my area, The Seattle Times and The Everett Herald.  Unfortunately the Seattle paper does not carry the Red Plum insert, so as soon as my subscription runs out I am cancelling it and getting two subscriptions to The Everett Paper.  When coupons are really good I will buy extra papers.  This ensures having enough coupons to use stocking up on items when they are really cheap.  For example, I used two "buy one get one free" coupons at Rite Aid yesterday to get four free Herbal Essence Products because the store was also having a "buy one get one free" sale on these products.  That easily paid for the cost of two papers for those coupons alone.  The Herald also has a deal going that allows you to get a subscription for $1 a week for 26 weeks, making it 50¢ cheaper than at the news stands.  Always check with your local paper for the best deals before subscribing.
  2. Get coupons off of the internet.  There are several great sites, including RedPlum.com, SmartSource.com, Coupons.com, BettyCrocker.com, SimpleAndDelicious.com, and Save-A-Lot.   Coupons available often change month to month, but this is variable.  When I first found these sites I was printing coupons like crazy.  Then I realized how much costly ink and paper I was using and how few of these coupons I was actually utilizing.  Now I print only high value coupons and coupons I know I will use.  If I need more, I go back later and print them.
  3. There is another coupon site on the web called "Bricks" at Coupons Inc.  You can print coupons directly from the manufacturers.  What is available and how long varies.  This is one of the best places to find great, high value coupons!
  4. All You Magazine, a monthly periodical sold only at Wal-Mart stores, is a good source for coupons.  Subscribing to the magazine is the most cost effective way to get it, and you can sometimes find discount subscriptions at Amazon.com.  Always look in all your other magazines too.  I have found coupons in Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, and Shape, to name a few.
  5. I always grab coupons from "Blinkie Machines" in the store isle.  Even if I don't need them right then, I file them away for later use, just in case.
  6. Look for "Peelies," coupons attached to the products you are buying.  Sometimes they are worth less than other manufacturer coupons you may already plan to use, so stash them away for later.  (You usually can't use more than one manufacturer coupon per transaction.)
  7. Sign up for product newsletters.  You often get coupons emailed to you this way.  I do suggest using a junk email for this, so your personal email doesn't get clogged up.  Some newsletters to try are Right At Home from SC Johnson that has great Glade coupons and  Nestle.comMambo Sprouts and Organic Valley Family of Farms are also good if you like natural and organic products.
  8. Join Vocalpoint, a program offered by Proctor & Gamble  that offers many fabulous samples and high value coupons.  You must fill out a questionaire and be accepted, because this is a "word of mouth program."  (Hint: the more people you talk to on a regular basis the more likely you are to be choosen.)  I recently received multiple $3.00 and $1.50 coupons for Kashi cereal and a $50+ jar of Olay Pro-X!
  9. Take a look inside packages and on boxes before tossing them in the garbage or in the recycling.  I have found some good coupons for example on cereal and granola bar boxes, and inside product packaging.
  10. If you have a little one in diapers, join all the diaper networks.  I have received great coupons from all three major brands.  To find out more information and for links go HERE.
  11. For those who don't want to hassle with paper coupons, you may want to try paperless eCoupons.  You can check out my post all about them  HERE.
Hope this helps any of you who are new to couponing with building your coupon supply!  For ideas on how to organize all those coupons, I like Money Saving Mom's method  HERE.  It is the organizational tool I use and it has worked well for me so far.

If you have any other ideas on accumulating coupons, please leave me a comment!
